The Passwordless Alliance stages on the high level event at WSIS 2025

Sharing real-world success stories how to change online services passwordlessly

Password-based security systems have long posed challenges, including user security risks, password reuse, and vulnerability to phishing and other attacks. The Passwordless Alliance promotes the adoption of the ITU-T X.1280 standard, which introduces an out-of-band mutual authentication model. This approach shifts the burden of proof from the user to the online service, dramatically improving security and usability.

At WSIS 2025, the Passwordless Alliance will take the stage as part of a High-Level Event session to share real-world success stories from France, Korea, and Ecuador. By showcasing how the Passwordless X1280, free software, can empower end users, protect personal data, and advance digital trust, the Alliance contributes to the broader WSIS vision of an inclusive and secure information society.

In an era where digital societies are at the heart of everything from private services to public services, these conversations could not be more timely. As WSIS+20 looks forward to the next chapter in digital development, initiatives like the Passwordless Alliance demonstrate how global collaboration and international standards can deliver both security and convenience — strengthening the very foundations of the digital society.

What is WSIS?

The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) is a global platform launched by the United Nations in 2003 to promote an inclusive and people-centered information society. WSIS brings together governments, international organizations, civil society, and industry experts to collaborate on how digital technology can drive sustainable and equitable development around the world.

In 2025, the WSIS+20 High-Level Event will be held from 7–11 July in Geneva, Switzerland, hosted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and co-organized with UNESCO, UNDP, and UNCTAD. This event marks 20 years since the original 2003 Geneva Plan of Action and will provide a forum to review progress and address new opportunities and challenges in digital development.

What is a “High-Level Event” at WSIS?

High-Level Events within WSIS are distinguished sessions featuring key thought leaders, policymakers, and innovators who share insights and strategic visions on shaping the global information society. These events highlight critical issues in technology and society, with the aim of fostering international collaboration and policy innovation.
